Chapter One of Crazy Love

I started reading and have read beyond these two chapters, but just didn't get around to blogging. So in the preface of the book I was immediately drawn in by a question Chan asks, "How many of you have read the New Testament and wondered if we in the church are missing it?" I'm totally raising my hand along with all the others Chan describes here!

In a class we attend at our church we read through the book of Matthew and studied it for a while. What God calls us to do in this book is, by far, not even touched by the American church! As we read, we were confronted with the clear and evident fact that believers all around us are not in any way doing what God has called us to do. But we had many discussions about actually DOING and LIVING it. Not just reading it, pushing it to the side, and becoming the "lukewarm" Christian.

The first chapter of the book really focuses on the magnitude of who God is and how amazingly HUGE the concept of God and creation is. Chan gives some interesting facts such as;

  • Did you know that a caterpillar has 228 separate and distinct muscles in its head?
  • The average elm tree has approximately 6 million leaves on it.
  • Think about the different sounds of your friend's laughs --wheezes, snorts, silent, loud, obnoxious.
We forget how incredible He really is. Chan shares some videos on God's creation of the universe.

Chan also talks about knowing who God really is. He is not someone different to all people. Chan says, "We don't get to decide who God is. God said to Moses, 'I am who I am" (Ex, 3:14) We don't get to change that."

Chan brings to light what the throne room is like according to Isaiah (Rev. 4, Is. 6).

I found a picture that was close to what I visualized (above).
  • Flashes of lightning
  • Rumblings and peals of thunder
  • Seven blazing torches
  • A sea of glass that looks like crystal
  • Twenty-four elders dressed in white and wearing golden crowns
  • Four six-winged beings with eyes all over their bodies and wings
  • One with the face of a lion
  • One with the face of an ox
  • One with the face of a man
  • One with the face of an eagle
  • These four creatures never stop saying, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come!"

I just love this description in the bible and have been reminded of it several times this week through this book, a sermon at church, and in a song.

If you don't read the book, check out these YouTube videos. Great stuff! What I took from this chapter is BE IN AWE! Because our creater is seriously amazing!

Do you believe in God because it makes sense or because it gives you comfort or something else?
